Your words stay with you.
Bible in Plain Sight (the Android app) and www.bibleinplainsight.com (this website)
The short version
- The app has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
- Everything you write in the app stays on your phone, encrypted. We never receive it and cannot read it.
- The app goes online only through Google Play: for the full version, and once at most for Google's own card to rate the app.
- You can export or delete everything you wrote at any time, in Settings.
- This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
The rest of this page explains the details.
1. Who we are
Bible in Plain Sight is published by Marek JANY, entrepreneur individuel (EI), a sole proprietor registered in France (SIRET 988 101 309 00017), Maison La Pierre, Route de la Salvetat, 34220 Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, France.
In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the publisher. We are responsible (the "controller") for the small amount of personal data we receive: the emails you send us and the purchase records Google Play gives us. You can reach us at support@bibleinplainsight.com.
2. What the app keeps on your phone
The app saves only what you choose to write or set:
- Journal entries: your words, the date and time, your answer to "How heavy does it feel right now?" (from Very heavy to Light), the topic you wrote from, and, if you wrote in "For someone I love" mode, the first name you typed.
- Check-ins and reminders: the topic, when the check-in or reminder is due, and your answer (Better, About the same or Worse).
- Stones of Remembrance and notes about what helped: your note, its date and its topic.
- Settings: how many days until a check-in, whether reminders show the topic, the country you chose for helplines or confirmed as the one you are in, whether you have seen the welcome screen, whether the full version is unlocked, and, so that it asks you to rate the app once at most, on how many different days you have opened it and whether it has already asked.
All of this is kept in the app's private storage on your phone, where other apps cannot read it. What you write (your journal, check-ins, stones and notes) is kept in an encrypted database. Its key is made on your phone and kept in Android's secure key storage, never next to the data. None of it is ever sent to us or to anyone else. The app does not keep a history of the topics you read.
What you write may be very personal, for example about your faith, your health or your family. That is exactly why it stays with you.
3. Topics that leave no trace
Two topics, "Being hurt at home" and "Afraid for my safety", are for people who may be in danger from someone who can look at their phone. On these topics the app saves nothing: no journal entry, no check-in, no reminder, nothing on the Timeline. They cannot be shared, they are hidden in the phone's recent apps screen, screenshots are blocked, and a Quick exit button closes them at once. The same protection stays on everything you open from them, such as the help screen, a whole chapter or a related topic, until you go back to Home or use Quick exit.
4. What the app can use on your phone
- Your phone's region setting. The app reads the country your phone is set to, so it can show helplines for your country. This happens on the phone and is not sent anywhere. You can choose a different country in Settings.
- Notifications, only if you allow them. The app uses them to remind you of a check-in. The reminders are created on your phone, not sent from a server, and they never alert anyone else. By default they only say "You have a new check-in." without the topic. On the most sensitive topics you decide whether you want a reminder at all, and when, and it only ever says "You have a reminder." On other topics you can choose to show the topic in Settings. You can turn reminders off at any time in Settings or in your phone's settings.
- Starting after a restart. This lets reminders you already have still arrive after your phone restarts.
- Google Play, and nothing else online. The app goes online only through the Play Store app on your phone: to show the price of the full version, to buy it, and, when the app starts or you come back to it, to check whether you own it, so a purchase made on another phone, or a refund, is picked up.
- Rating the app. At a moment of thanks, such as after you save a Stone of Remembrance, and once at most, the app may ask Google Play to show its own card for rating the app. It never asks on the crisis or sensitive topics. Google decides whether the card appears, and the app is not told whether you rated it or what you wrote. "Rate this app" in Settings opens the app's page in Google Play.
The app does not ask for and does not use your contacts, location, camera, microphone, photos, files, calls or messages.
5. Calls, texts and links to helplines
When you tap a helpline, the app opens your phone's own phone or messages app with the number filled in. Nothing is dialed or sent until you press call or send. The app does not see the call or the message. Links to helpline websites open in your browser. The organizations you contact have their own privacy practices.
6. Sharing a verse and exporting your data
You can share a verse as an image, and you can export all your data as one file (in Settings, "Export all data"). Both go through your phone's share menu, to the app or the person you choose. After that, the copy is handled by the app or service you chose, not by us.
The export file holds everything you wrote, so the app does not keep it longer than needed: it is removed from the app's temporary storage before your next export, when you delete all data, and when you next open the app on a later day.
7. Backups and moving to a new phone
Nothing you write in the app is backed up anywhere, and nothing moves to a new phone. The app switches off Android's backup to Google Drive, and it also blocks the direct copy from an old phone to a new one (with a cable or wirelessly). The key that unlocks your journal never leaves your phone either. If you change or reset your phone, use "Export all data" first to keep a copy.
8. Deleting your data
- Delete all data (in Settings) removes your journal, check-ins, stones, reminders and settings from the phone. Deleted text is overwritten, so it cannot be recovered from the phone afterwards.
- Deleting a single journal entry also removes its waiting check-in and reminder.
- Uninstalling the app removes everything it saved.
Because we never have a copy, we cannot restore your data for you.
9. Buying the full version
Eighteen topics, and every feature, are free. One purchase unlocks the other topics. The purchase goes through Google Play:
- Google handles the payment. We never see your card or other payment details.
- Google Play tells the app that the purchase is valid, and the app remembers on your phone that the full version is unlocked. When the app starts, it asks Google Play again, so the full version unlocks by itself on a new phone, and a refund locks it again.
- Google Play gives us order details, such as the order number, date, price and country, and lets us look up an order by the email address of the Google account that made it. We use these only to help you with your order or a refund, and for our accounting and tax obligations. French law requires us to keep sales records for up to 10 years.
The legal bases are the purchase contract and our legal obligations (GDPR Article 6(1)(b) and (c)). Google's handling of your data is covered by Google's privacy policy.
10. When you email us
If you write to support@bibleinplainsight.com, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and your message. We use them only to reply to you. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). We delete the conversation 12 months after it ends, unless we need it longer to settle a dispute. Our mailbox is provided by Hostinger International Ltd (Cyprus, EU).
Please do not send us more personal details than you need to. Our mailbox is not watched around the clock and cannot help in an emergency. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call the local emergency number.
11. This website
This website is hosted on GitHub Pages by GitHub, Inc. When you visit it, GitHub receives technical data, such as your IP address, and keeps a record of it for security purposes, as described in GitHub's privacy statement. GitHub may process this data in the United States. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the website running and safe (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).
The website uses no cookies, no analytics and no ads, and it loads nothing from other services: its fonts and pictures are stored with the site. We do not receive information about individual visitors.
12. Children
The app is meant for people aged 13 and over, and it is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly receive data from children under 13. If you believe a child has written to us, contact us and we will delete the message.
13. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you (emails and purchase records), to limit or object to its use, and to receive a copy of it. Write to support@bibleinplainsight.com. We will answer within one month.
What you write in the app is on your phone, so you control it directly: you can export it or delete it at any time.
You can also complain to a data protection authority: in France, the CNIL (3 Place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07, www.cnil.fr), or the authority in the country where you live.
14. How we keep data safe
- In the app: your data stays in the app's private storage; what you write is encrypted, with a key kept in the phone's secure key storage; deleted text is overwritten; backups and phone-to-phone transfer are off; the export file is removed soon after use; the two topics above leave no trace; the app makes no network connections except through Google Play, for the full version and its rating card.
- On our side: we keep only emails and purchase records, and we protect our email and Google Play accounts with strong passwords and two-step verification.
15. Not a medical app
Bible in Plain Sight offers Christian Scripture, prayer and optional reflection. It does not provide diagnosis, therapy or emergency response. No one monitors your journal or check-in answers. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call the local emergency number. Use “Help now” to find listed support services.
16. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a new version of the app changes what it does with your data, we will update this policy before that version is released.
